Found a place anywhere online? Check it before you send anyone money.
Zillow, Craigslist, Facebook, Instagram, a group chat, a text from a “landlord” — paste it here. Any listing, any site.
We flag the scam signs, add up what it wants before you get a key, and tell you whether that deposit is legal where the place is. Free, and no account needed.

Is that deposit even legal where you live?
About half the states cap what a landlord may hold. Give us your ZIP and we’ll check the number they’re asking for against your state’s law.

How it works
Three steps to a safe move
- 1
Verify once
Confirm your ID with a live selfie (a background check too, if you want). You get a Trust Passport that proves you're real — yours to carry anywhere.
- 2
Match & agree
Browse scam-screened, verified listings, message the host, and agree on the terms up front. No off-platform pressure, no surprises.
- 3
Move in, protected
Your first month is frozen until you confirm you're in, and rent runs in-app with receipts. Not as promised in the first 48 hours? Report it with photos and your held first month comes back in full.
Good to know
Questions? Answered.
Does it cost anything to look?
No. Browsing, messaging and applying are free. And once you move in, you pay your rent and nothing on top — no fee for paying rent, no card surcharge, ever. The only things you'd ever pay for are optional: a membership if you want one, and a protection fee if a deposit goes into a protected account.
Who holds my deposit?
Where we offer a protected deposit, it's locked with our payment provider for the whole stay: the host can't withdraw it and Sharelet never holds it — only the terms release it. At move-out it comes back to you, minus any itemized, photo-evidenced deductions, and if the host goes quiet it returns to you automatically. Some states, Massachusetts among them, require deposits to sit in a specific kind of local account we can't provide, so we don't take one there — your first month is still frozen until you've moved in, which is the protection that matters most anyway.
How do you know people are real?
Anyone can browse with a verified email, but nobody reaches a move-in on that alone: a government ID with a live selfie is required to host or to move in, with a background check optional on top. Verification shows as a badge, so you always know which one you're dealing with.
Does Sharelet ask for my SSN?
No, never. ID and background checks run on Stripe and Checkr's secure systems — Sharelet never sees or stores your documents or your SSN.
What if the place isn't as promised?
The First Night Promise: if it's misrepresented, unsafe, or fake, report it within 48 hours of move-in with photos. Your held first month comes back in full, and so does any deposit still held, once you've returned the keys. It covers the place not matching its listing, not a change of mind. Full terms at /guarantee.
